If you would like to join the WI but your evenings are already fully booked then Bookhams WI might be the answer. We meet at the Old Barn Hall on the first Wednesday of the month at 2:30pm.
This spring our members have enjoyed a varied programme of talks and activities including a music recital and a baked potato lunch and games afternoon. We have heard talks on a variety of topics including a fascinating talk by Jan Heasman about the setting up of the first WI in a womens’ prison. We learnt that the prisoners really appreciated the opportunity to learn new cooking and craft skills and how being part of the WI has helped them gain in self-esteem and confidence. In March we listened to Carol Ransom’s amusing talk on ‘The History of Knickers’. April’s talk by Sue Kidger on the topic ‘Hedgehog Rescue’ left us determined to make our gardens more hedgehog friendly. We were delighted that Sue managed to bring ‘Alfie’ one of the hedgehogs she has rescued to our meeting. Future plans include a trip to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club and a special bursary day at the end of May.
By the way I forgot to mention that we always round off our meetings with tea and delicious cakes.
