Bookham Youth & Community Centre

centresquarerThe Monday and Wednesday evening Clubs that used to be run by Surrey county Council Youth Services have now formally stopped due to a mixture of funding cuts, new approach to youth and difficulties in staffing resource. Discussions are in progress with local organisations to ‘fill the gap’ within the community but this is unlikely to happen in the short term.  Other Youth organisations continue to use the large amount of space that is available together with the much improved supplementary facilities. This allows the groups using the facility a large degree of flexibility in activities in a spacious environment.  It is used by other youth and young adult groups such as Disability Challengers, Barnardos and St Nicolas Church. All these run Clubs in the evenings and Disability Challengers use the Centre during the holidays. A new Theatre based club for young people is opening on Mondays.  Other groups use the facilities on an ad hoc basis.

Discussions continue to be held with SCC & MVDC to replace the existing building which does have a limited life span with a new community facility but this could take us beyond the current lease which expires in 2019.

During Term time Smarty  Pants pre-school use the Centre and can be contacted by calling the Centre during term time hours or via  http://www.smartypantspreschool.co.uk.  The Centre is used by other members of the community for leisure activities using the Sports and Social halls such as U3A and Fitness classes.(see picture)

We have had positive comments by people who have used the Centre for large Adult parties such as fiftieth birthday with a band etc. Depending on what else is being provided there is seating for 100 people and cutlery and plates can be provided for a small additional charge. We also have decorative chain lights that brighten up the Sports Hall to add to other decorations of the users. The Event Rate (6-11pm) is £100 Friday and Saturday and £80 Sundays and Bank Holidays and includes dedicated parking on the hard court at rear of the Centre.

We are looking for one or more people willing to keep any eye on the ‘garden’ at the front left (from the road) of the Centre. This was an area of land cleared of rubbish, put down to matting and bark then planted with shrubs which has improved the look of the area. All we need is volunteer(s) to keep plants watered as required (supply available) and area kept tidy of weeds on an ad hoc basis with no other commitments to the Centre. This is mainly a spring and summer need.
